Emergencies can happen anywhere, at work, at home, in the community or when you least expect them. The HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course helps you build the confidence and practical skills to respond when someone needs urgent help. You will learn how to assess a situation, provide first aid, perform CPR, use first aid equipment and respond calmly until professional medical assistance arrives.
At Australian Polytechnic Institute (AuPI), this nationally recognised unit is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining pre-course learning with practical face-to-face training and assessment. This means you can complete the theory preparation before class, then practise essential first aid skills with trainer guidance in a supportive environment.
Whether you need first aid for work, study, volunteering, community involvement or personal confidence, this course can help you feel more prepared to act.
Assessment is designed to help you demonstrate both your first aid knowledge and your practical response skills. Your assessment may include knowledge questions, practical demonstrations, CPR demonstration, first aid response scenarios, use of first aid equipment, simulated emergency situations and trainer observation.

In this course, you will learn how to provide a first aid response in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. You will learn how to:
You will also build confidence in staying calm, following a process and taking practical steps when someone needs help.
This course uses a blended learning model. Before attending your face-to-face session, you will complete pre-course learning through a workbook or e-learning module. This helps you understand the key concepts before practising skills in class.
Your face-to-face workshop includes: theory recap, trainer-led demonstration, guided practical practice, CPR practice, use of first aid equipment, scenario-based activities and practical assessment. This approach helps you arrive prepared, practise with confidence and receive direct guidance from your trainer.
First aid is a hands-on skill, so practical training is an important part of this course. At AuPI, you will practise first aid responses in a simulated environment that reflects real emergency situations.
You may use equipment such as adult resuscitation manikins, infant resuscitation manikins, AED training devices, training first aid kits, bandages, gloves, face shields and wipes, CPR practice mats and scenario and demonstration resources. The training environment is designed to help you practise safely and build confidence before being assessed.
This course may be a good fit for you if you need first aid training for your workplace, work in education/child care/aged care/security/community services, are studying health/care/community services, need to renew first aid and CPR skills, volunteer in the community, or want to feel more confident responding to emergencies.
Important: Students must be physically able to kneel on the floor and perform CPR on a manikin.
