Some emergencies need more than basic first aid. They need someone who can stay calm, assess the situation, take practical action and provide a higher level of support until professional medical help arrives. The HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course helps you build the skills and knowledge to provide an advanced first aid response in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

At Australian Polytechnic Institute (AuPI), this nationally recognised unit is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining pre-course self-paced learning with face-to-face practical training and assessment. You will complete your theory preparation before class, then practise advanced first aid and CPR skills with trainer guidance in a practical, supportive environment.

This course is designed for people who want to feel more prepared, capable and confident when responding to first aid situations in workplaces, community settings and care environments.

  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of course commencement
  • Have successfully completed Year 10 or equivalent, or have other relevant qualification/s
  • Have the physical ability to kneel on the floor and perform CPR on an adult manikin for at least 2 minutes
  • Complete the pre-course workbook or e-learning module before attending the face-to-face workshop
  • Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course (ACSF Level 3)

Assessment is designed to help you demonstrate both your advanced first aid knowledge and your practical response skills. Your assessment may include knowledge questions, practical CPR demonstration, AED use in a simulated scenario, advanced first aid response scenarios, trainer observation, practical demonstrations, workplace-style emergency response activities and simulated first aid situations.

  • Provide an advanced first aid response
  • Perform CPR
  • Use an AED training device
  • Follow first aid and emergency response procedures

You will also build confidence in staying calm, following a structured process, working with others and taking practical action when someone needs urgent support.

This course is delivered through a blended learning model. Before attending your face-to-face session, you will complete pre-course learning through a workbook or e-learning module. This helps you understand key concepts before practising your skills in class.

Your face-to-face workshop includes: theory recap, trainer-led demonstrations, guided practical practice, CPR practice, AED practice, first aid scenarios, advanced first aid response activities, practical assessment and trainer feedback and support.

Practical Advanced First Aid Training

Advanced first aid is hands-on. You need to practise what to do, not just read about it. At AuPI, you will complete practical activities in a simulated environment that reflects real first aid situations.

You may use equipment such as adult resuscitation manikins, infant resuscitation manikins, AED training devices, training first aid kits, bandages, gloves, face shields and wipes, CPR practice mats and scenario and demonstration resources.
